History of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Casey
The Casey Evangelical United Brethren Church in Christ considers the date of its birth as September 18, 1893. Many of the United Brethren Long Point Circuit members (located west of Casey), retired and were moving to Casey. The Rev. Alva Button, who was sent by the Conference, met with these people in a tent at the corner of the present West First Street and West Main. At the end of a three week meeting she organized a class of 27 members. During the next two years they met in various other churches in Casey and were called the "Casey Mission Station." Alva Button was the preacher during the first year. At the end of two years the conference detached it from the Long Point Circuit. In May 1895 the Mission organized a Board of Trustees under the name of the United Brethern in Christ at Casey, Illinois. A lot was purchased and plans were made to build a new church at the location of the present Lutheran church at the corner of 1st and Colorado (then 6th and Colorado). The new church, costing $4200, was dedicated on May 24, 1896.
The first parsonage was built at 303 East Colorado in the early 1900s and traded for the property at 202 North Central in 1919 so that it could be closer to the church.
After several years the congregation grew to nearly 350 members and outgrew the church. In 1912 plans were made to build a new church at the southeast corner of Alabama and North Central, the present location of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
